So which story is true? Maybe all of them. Or perhaps none.

When we started pulling apart the numbers, something unexpected emerged. The work isn’t simply disappearing. It’s moving, being redistributed and reclassified. And the Administrative Profession itself appears to be bifurcating.

One part of the profession is increasingly vulnerable to AI, automation and offshoring. The other is becoming more strategic, better compensated and more essential to the organizations it supports.

We spent months examining federal labor data, 15 years of Admin Awards research, and more than 27,000 nominations to understand what’s really happening beneath the surface. What we found points to a widening divide, with very different implications depending on which side of it you’re on.
